As anyone with lupus knows, a flare can appear to come out of nowhere. And, even though I have created this comprehensive list of warning signs, it by no means is saying that you will have any notice of a flare, or that there will not be other symptoms not listed. However, in many cases, as we with lupus also know, there are usual tell tale warning signs of an impending flare up.
Also, some of these warning signs can also be a part of your daily life in general–nothing new. Every lupus victim is different. No two are the same. That is why you need to pay attention to your triggers. Keep a journal to aid you in pinpointing what might be triggering them. Knowing the warning signs of an impending lupus flare can help you to be better prepared.
20 Warning Signs of an Impending Lupus Flare
- Lupus butterfly rash.
- Mouth sores.
- Extreme exhaustion. (more than usual)
- Muscle Pain.
- Water retention.
- Unexplained rashes or sores on your skin.
- Joint pain and swelling.
- Brain Fog.
- Digestive issues.
- Darker than normal urine.
- Sores inside the nose.
- Swelling of legs.
- Change in apetite.
- Enlargement of your lymph nodes.
- Any other new or unusual symptoms.
Lupus is a brutal foe. It does not care how it disrupts your life, and will attack any area of your body at any time. Being mindful and aware of our adversary, can help us better manage the attacks.
It is vital that you get plenty of water and rest. These are huge defenses. Yes, it will be hard. And, yes, it sucks like hell. Trust me. I KNOW. But, you are strong! WE ARE STRONG!

Be ready at all times, and pay attention to your body. Don’t do the things that you know are just going to cause you more pain later. Make yourself a priority. Make it your mission to take control of your life—even in the midst of the brutality of a lupus flare!
